If you have a pool in your backyard, chances are you are going to want to create a seating and entertaining area around the pool. For this you are going to bring in a lot of outdoor furniture that will suit the bill for your needs. But not just any outdoor furniture will do.
While you would expect all patio furniture to deal with the elements of the outdoors, such as rain and snow, when you are putting furniture by a pool, you are asking much more of it. You are asking it to put up with amplified possibilities for damage that are caused by the pool. Let’s take a look at these.
Water Damage
First and foremost on this list is water damage. You know that just by the fact that this set of furniture is by the pool that everyone and their brother are going to be sitting on it right after they get out of the water. While most furniture is expected to put up with some water damage, this is constant water being not only put on the surface of the outdoor furniture, but also then pushed down into the cushions by the pressure of the person sitting on it.
Before you make a purchase of patio furniture for around your pool see how much water and mold resistance is built into the pieces so you know they can handle the excess water they will be getting.
Chemical Damage
The chemicals that are used to keep your pool water swimmable are not only going to have an impact on the pool water, but also anything that pool water touches. In the case of your furniture, chlorine and other chemicals can have a bleaching effect on the outside furniture. You won’t see this the first time someone with a wet bathing suit sits down, but it is a compounding issue that can eventually create spots on your furniture that are lighter than others and make your cushions or other parts of the furniture look discolored.
To prevent this you may want to look for patio furniture that is already in light colors of perhaps pieces without fabric that can be impacted by the effects of the chemicals.
Sun Damage
The next thing to think of is the possibility of sun damage to your garden furniture. While you may think that all outside furniture can handle the sunlight, or at least should be able to, it is quite different when you put that outdoor furniture by a pool and in the sun. You see, the water in the pool (and possibly pool water on the furniture) magnifies the rays of the sun to make them even more damaging. That means that bleaching and fading you naturally expect from the sun can be much more quickly acting and pronounced when this furniture is right beside the pool.
As a way to counter this you may want to look for lighter colored furniture that will not show the fading as easily as other pieces will.
